oh BOLOGNA! how we love you! you are earthy, comforting, delicious, vibrant, friendly, modern and beautifully historic AND our new favorite place to hop over to on weekends!
the above dish is bologna's famous bolognese ragù sauce served with tagliatelle pasta. it is so fresh and hearty and addictive! the tagliatelle pasta's texture is porous and rough, making it ideal for thick sauces - every bite is just FULL of flavor!
the photo below the bolognese pasta is the view of the canal from location #1. the photo of chris + kate by the cut out window is taken at location #3. see the map screenshot + descriptions below for exact street locations!
canal location #1: via guglielmo oberdan
canal location #2: via piella
canal location #3: via piella - has the cut out window with door! jack and kate were thrilled to be able to look through it!
canal location #4: via malcontenti - this is probably my favorite view!
after checking out all four views of the charming canal, we had lunch at the gessetto ristorante located nearby at the piazza san martino! by the way, all of the food photos in this post are from our lunch at this highly recommended restaurant!
the above (right) photo is the view from location #2! and this is the delicious mortadella bologna. i don't know if it was my imagination or what but it seems most of bologna's buildings are painted in this color!
this view from location #4! i love the views from all four locations and it only takes just a few minutes to get to each one so try to visit all of them! but if you really are short on time, just go directly to this one as it is probably the most picturesque:
view from location #3 through cut out window!:
three out of the next four photos below are taken from location #4. the balcony one with the pink mop/green awning was taken from location #2.
bologna is famous for its porticos! it has more than 600 covered arches covering length of nearly 40 kilometers! each one is unique and beautiful and allows you to walk from portico to portico on rainy days without an umbrella! and on sunny days, they also act as wonderful shields against the heat!
shops with pretty trinkets set up at the base of bologna's two famous towers!:
if you are visiting bologna, you MUST (absolutely must!) stop by the SORBETTERIA CASTIGLIONE and have their gelatos. we've had our share of gelatos in our two years of living in italy and i must say this is our favorite so far! try the DOLCE EMMA: the sweetness of the caramelized figs, the salty creaminess of the fresh ricotta cheese, and the acidity of lemon was a combination that made me feel like i was floating in HEAVEN!
this is the torresotto di strada castiglione located on via castiglione. after you pass through this beautiful archway, the gelataria i mentioned above is on the left side!
ON OUR NEXT VISIT!:
we are excited to keep returning to bologna to experience more of this gorgeous city! on our next visit, we plan on climbing the LEANING ASINELLI TOWER, which by the way, has a curious love story involving a donkey and some buried treasure! i'll be happy to share more of that after we make the climb!
we also have marked the following places to visit!: the quadrilatero - the oldest market in bologna anatomical theater municipal library of archiginnasio piazza maggiore fountain of neptune basilica of san petronio sanctuary of the madoanna of san luca FICO world eataly
MY MUST HAVE CAMERA EQUIPMENT:
** ona messenger bag – my favorite camera bag! here too. ** nikon camera body ** 35mm lens (less expensive sigma option) – if i could have only one lens this would be it as it’s small and versatile! i like to take close up detail shots like food with this. ** 85mm lens – perfect portrait lens for creating that amazing bokeh/blur in the background! ** 14-24mm lens – as a little girl that dreamed of being an architect, i can’t live without this lens. this lens takes your travel photos to another level for sure!
