SANTORINI, GREECE: ARRIVAL + SPECTACULAR SUNSET!

after a relaxing plane ride (landed in athens + connected to a smaller plane to santorini), we gathered our checked luggage and were immediately greeted by our driver that our airbnb owner arranged!

he drove us to OIA and pulled up to the point where he couldn't drive anymore and we were then promptly met with mike who grabbed our luggage and happily led the way (up and down many steps!) to our cave house! we were so grateful as it was a HOT day and it seemed like a big maze to get to it!

malinda greeted us warmly at the pristine cave house and offered to help us book restaurants and fun activities! she was so sweet and made us feel completely at home.

chris then unpacked - everywhere we go, this is always the first thing he does! i walked over to our quaint well stocked (fresh fruits, milk, eggs, bread, water, jam, butter, etc.) kitchen and made us some greek coffee! and the kids? jack and kate couldn't get their swimsuits on fast enough to go take a dip in the warm hot tub!

so, while the kids were having "the best time ever" in the hot tub, i tossed the camera over to chris and told him to make me look like a super model! he raised one eyebrow and said he'll TRY! this little area with the green gate is right next to our airbnb.

as i was standing there, the sweetest little grandma came out of her home and we chatted by her green gate: she in 100% greek and i in 100% english and somehow we were able to understand one another.

she said all of her children had moved over to athens and she was now living alone in santorini. and that she lived through the big earthquake of 1956 when everyone she knew abandoned the island. she looked so lonely, my heart ached for her.

oh my goodness!! you must have dinner here if you can! we gobbled up dish after dish, while enjoying the most fantastic VIEW! it was incredibly relaxing and everyone around us was clearly enjoying themselves. we struck up amazing conversations with the friendliest travelers and that made the experience even more memorable for us.

and let me tell you about the staff - they will take care of you so well. they were gracious and funny and kind and just WONDERFUL. if you want to dine here (or any other restaurant in santorini), please MAKE reservations in advance. we saw many sad faces being turned away as they were fully booked.

well, chris and the kids are all tucked in bed and already sawing away logs! i've just laid out the clothes for tomorrow's fun adventure, packed up our bag with swimsuits, towels, flip flops and sunscreen. and downloaded today's photos onto our portable hard drive. i'm so grateful for our safe arrival here in this beautiful paradise and can't wait for the morning!

tomorrow's ITINERARY includes:

wake up, shower and eat breakfast at airbnb
have lunch at PITOGYROS
pick up our RENTAL CAR
check out the BLACK SAND BEACHES (if time red sand, white sand beaches too)
explore a town called EMPORIO
have dinner back in oia at MELTINI!

for those interested, my dress and shoes are from sezane. i also LOVE LOVE these closed toed castañer carina 60 espadrilles. the height (make sure you get the one that says "60") is perfect for walking around greece comfortably! unless, you plan on hiking to see the volcano!

and i'm wearing this necklace and my favorite gold rings!
